Automating smaller batch semiconductor wafer inspection systems for improved throughput and efficiency

A world-renowned technology company developing powerful high resolution 3D light field display products required a cost-effective and efficient solution for inspecting smaller batches of semiconductor wafers as part of their research and development.

In high volume production fabs, a large-scale wafer inspection system is typically required. However, in this case, the company needed a system capable of inspecting up to 100 wafers daily with precision and efficiency.

To address this challenge, they collaborated with Prior Scientific to develop a customized automated inspection platform.

The chosen solution involved combining the Nikon wafer inspection loader with the Prior Scientific ProScan HWL6NWL200 wafer shuttle stage to ensure dependable loading and XY inspection of the wafers.

Prior’s PS3H122R focus drive was incorporated into the system to facilitate motorized enabled seamless changes between different illumination. The inspection process used brightfield and fluorescent illumination techniques to thoroughly analyze the wafers for any defects.

High-quality imaging essential for detailed analysis is captured through Nikon NIS Elements software, allowing trained technicians to conduct thorough examinations of the wafer surfaces.

These components, when combined, provided reliable and affordable results for the world's largest and most successful tech companies.

The system reduces manual handling, minimizes inspection time, and maintains consistent quality standards – critical requirements for companies developing next-generation display technologies where precision and repeatability are essential.
