Software Design Engineer

We are currently seeking a software design engineer to be based at our main manufacturing facility in Fulbourn, Cambridge.

Position Description

The Software Design Engineer will be responsible for providing solutions across the whole software development life cycle. To include requirements capture, interface and system design, implementation, test and maintenance of existing systems and documentation. This will encompass both mainstream product and production test software.

Primary Responsibilities and Skills

  • Work with the Sales and Marketing departments, Project Managers and customers to create specifications for both new products and improvements to the existing range.
  • Attend and contribute to project meetings along with sales teams, R&D staff, production staff and customers.
  • Responsible for the creation of real time software for embedded systems, primarily for STM32 and H8 microcontrollers.
  • Responsible for debugging embedded software using in-circuit tools.
  • Detailed knowledge of communications protocols such as SPI, I2C ,CAN, USB, UART etc.
  • Responsible for developing software using multiple high level programming languages, like C/C++/C# for DLLs/applications for both windows and Linux based operating systems.
  • Work with production to develop and provide solutions for production test requirements.
  • Responsible for the build control and software release using our source code control system.
  • Create and maintain project documentation.
  • Work closely with other R&D disciplines to integrate products.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of all existing software.
  • Forge relationships with external client software developers.

Secondary Responsibilities and Skills

  • Working understanding of digital HW design and control theory for both stepper and linear motors.
  • Use of oscilloscope and other HW test tools.
  • PID control loop theory.
  • Knowledge of Visual Studio and uVision5 or similar IDE’s.
  • Knowledge of embedded real time operating systems such as FreeRTOS
  • Linux/Raspberry Pi .
  • To carry out any other duties deemed necessary by the management team.
